It is getting easier and less expensive to set up home pages on the Web. With every new web site and every new web page, it is also becoming increasingly annoying for cyber-travellers and net surfers to know if they want to visit a web site or not. And, often, when a hot link or a random click brings them to a new web site, it is increasingly difficult to decide whether to hit the BACK button or to explore further.
In an effort to help browsers visit sites that are interesting, well designed, carefully planned, or just worth exploring, IMRAN {Information & Media Resources, Affiliations, Networks} has designed an Internet Rating system, called I-RATE, or Irate for short. Irate, a copyright and trademark of Imran Anwar and Imran Anwar, Inc., is designed to make it easy for information seekers and providers to have a common rating system for a site.
IMRAN rates web pages or web sites by random visits, or based upon requests received from Webmasters, or recommendations from net surfers. The web site is given a rating of 1-10, based on different aspects of the site, but with a strong subjective opinion angle. Generally, the ratings are based on basic idea, content, design, layout, links, ease of use, repeat visitability, and any other subjective or objective aspect that makes the site worth a visit.
A site is given a numeric rating that is based on this overall value, and assigned an Irate icon and brief text. This enables the visitor to have an idea of the site's value and strength. At the same time it provides the Webmaster or Pagemaster an outside opinion on how to possibly improve their pages to make it even more valuable.
An Irate rating is valid for a period of time, after which it may be re-rated, upgraded, or downgraded. Webmasters can display the Irate on the main page to which it relates, with a link to the brief text explanation that is kept at their site, and a link to this page, to enable visitors to have a better understanding of the Irate system and to provide feedback if they think a site should be rated lower or higher. It also allows them to submit their own or other URLs for Irating.
