IMRAN pioneered and established the first ISP and internet email in Pakistan, along with working on the creation of the .PK domain for Pakistan and setting up a "basic" network that acts as a backbone for email users in Pakistan. Currently the backbone runs along the lines of covering high volume areas. These are Karachi (KHI), Lahore (LHE) Islamabad (ISB) and Sialkot (SKT). Now Peshawar (PSH) also has a local node. We own and manage the central nodes in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Peshawar and Sialkot are third parties of independent ownership.
By central nodes we mean the LOCAL numbers we make available to single users who dial a LOCAL number to access their email and also to send any email they want.
Due to growth and expansion in Karachi we also have a new additional location in Karachi, KHI2.
Thus users can send and receive email of two kinds in the same LOCAL call, email to and from fellow system users in the SAME city, email associates in other PAKISTANI cities, and email associates ANYWHERE in the world on internet, Compuserve, America Online, INFONET, and others with internet connections, like Prodigy, GEnie, etc.
The standard internet addressing is followed to keep the system logical and easy to understand. imran.pk is the internet definition for the backbone in Pakistan. City names are usually followed as given in int'l airline codes, eg user@khi.imran.pk for a user in Karachi.
Email is subsidized for individual users and currently the rates are between Rs. 2 and 5 per kilobyte depending on the level of usage and support. Modem speeds of 2400-14400 are supported.
The method of email is currently store and forward because live access still costs too much for the majority of users.
